John Barry

It was announced today, 31 January 2011, that John Barry had died of a heart attack at the age of 77. Born in York into a cinema family, John Prendergast made his first steps to fame with the John Barry Seven. His big break came with his arrangement of the Monty Norman theme for Dr. No. He subsequently wrote 11 scores for the James Bond series. However, he also won five oscars for soundtracks to Born Free (2) , The Lion in Winter, Out of Africa and Dances with Wolves. He was arguably the greatest of the modern film composers. In 2005, he was awarded the BAFTA Fellowship.
