Lauren Bacall – A Legend Dies

News broke in the early hours that legend of stage and screen, Lauren Bacall died on August 12th 2014 at her home in New York. Known for her husky voice and smouldering looks she launched to fame after starring opposite Humphrey Bogart in the classic film noir, To Have and Have not. Following this she had a string of starring roles with Bogart in other film noir classics such as The Big Sleep, Dark Passage and Key Largo. The pair famously married in 1945 when she was 20 and he was 45 and enjoyed a twelve year marriage together until he died in 1957. Bacall was a versatile actress though and as well as her film noir roles, she was also known for her comedy roles in films such as How To Marry A Millionaire, in which she starred with Marilyn Monroe and Designing Woman opposite Gregory Peck. She received a BAFTA nomination for her role in The Shootist opposite John Wayne and was nominated for an Academy Award for the film The Mirror Has Two Faces and in 2009 she was awarded an Honorary Award by the Academy “in recognition of her central place in the golden age of motion pictures.”
