Maureen O’Hara, born Maureen FitzSimons in Dublin, began her career with a screen test in London. Although it was deemed unsatisfactory by the industry, the test caught the attention of Charles Laughton and together with business partner Erich Pommel, they offered O’Hara a seven year contract with their company Mayflower Pictures.

O’Hara’s first major film role was in Alfred Hitchcock‘s Jamaica Inn (1939), again impressing Laughton and he cast her as Esmeralda opposite himself in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939). She went on to star in films such as How Green Was My Valley (1941), the still popular Christmas classic Miracle on 34th Street (1947), Our Man in Havana (1959) and The Parent Trap (1961).

She is often remembered for her on screen chemistry with John Wayne in films such as Rio Grande (1950), The Quiet Man (1952), The Wings of Eagles (1957), McLintock! (1963) and Big Jake (1971).

He final film was Only the Lonely (1991) with John Candy and in 2014 she was award an Honorary Academy Award with the inscription “To Maureen O’Hara, one of Hollywood’s brightest stars, whose inspiring performances glowed with passion, warmth and strength“. This made her only the second actress in cinema history to receive this award without ever having been nominated for an acting award previously.
