Day School: Indigenous Peoples in the Cinemas of Australia and New Zealand

Saturday 20 May 10.30am – 4.30pm

The Indigenous peoples of Australia and the Maori of New Zealand (indigenous Polynesians) form significant minority populations in their countries. They appear in local films and they are active as filmmakers, but their histories in the film cultures of Australia and New Zealand differ. In this Day School we’ll consider why this might be and look at both ‘European’ films featuring Indigenous peoples and films made from within the communities.

The day will include a full screening of Charlie’s Country (Australia 2014).
