Day School: An Introduction to Egyptian Cinema

Mechanics Institute Library, Bradford

Saturday 12 May, 10.30am – 4.30pm

Tutor: Roy Stafford

Egypt is one of the three major film-producing countries in Africa but in the UK it receives less attention than South Africa or Nigeria. Traditionally its focus has been on entertainment features for the Arab world but in the last decade independent films have begun to emerge and the events of the ‘Arab Spring’ of 2011 have changed the country.

The Day School will look at some of the few contemporary films available in the UK and also the work of Youssef Chahine (1926-2008), the celebrated director of the studio period of Egyptian cinema.

Tea and coffee are available in the Mechanics Institute Library. There are places nearby to buy lunch and you are also welcome to bring your own lunch.

Tickets are £14 and £9 concessions.
