Ian McKellen’s own adaptation of Richard III was lauded for its audacious updating to 1930s Britain and his portrayal of Richard as fascist villain. With an all-star cast and dramatic set pieces, this production introduced McKellen as a genuine screen star and led the way towards big budget Hollywood spectaculars.
