Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are two minor characters from Hamlet directed by the Queen to keep an eye on the prince, who is acting strangely. In the Shakespeare play they claim 250 lines. In Stoppard’s play they take centre stage and, with their bumbling spying, turn Elsinore upside down. Stoppard directs the movie of his acclaimed play in which this blundering duo observe as events play out towards a tragic, corpse-strewn conclusion.
