Sweet and Lowdown centres on Woody Allen’s love of jazz and is a fanciful biography of a legendary guitarist, Emmet Ray, who clashed with lovers, gangsters, musicians and success itself in 1930s Depression-era America. Sean Penn, as Emmet, forever in the shadow of his rival Django Reinhardt, is mesmerising as the (fictional) hero and was Oscar-nominated for his efforts. A composite sketch of many of the musicians, sounds and attitudes of the halcyon days of swing, this fable benefits from another considerable Allen ensemble but one that is built around the extraordinary talents of the chameleon-like Penn.
