Room at the Top
| Bradford City of Film joins Cinema Bistro to present an unforgettable cinematic experience in celebration of Bradford’s unique film heritage, with a screening of one of the most iconic feature films made in the city to date!
The screening will be held after the spectacular launch event of Bradford’s wonderful new City Park, a six-acre public space surrounding City Hall. Set in 1940s Yorkshire and based on the hit 1957 novel by Bingley author John Braine,Room at the Top, a story of a young man at odds with his lust and ambition, was a hit novel when published in 1957 and turned Joe Lampton into an iconic character of post-war Britain. |
Despite nearly not making it to the big screen thanks to what was perceived at the time to be its incredibly risque subject matter, Room at the Top became one of the most critically and commercially successful feature films of its generation, collecting multiple Oscar and BAFTA awards following its release in 1959 and firmly cementing Bradford’s place on the international film map.
Room at the Top will be introduced by author and film expert Tony Earnshaw, who will take a behind the scenes look at the film, which was shot on location in Bradford, including the City Hall, in 1958. |
