On this  day in 1937 Captains Courageous was released.

Advertised by MGM as a coming-age-classic with action, it is the story of a spoiled little rich kid (Bartholomew) who falls overboard whilst on a trans-Atlantic voyage and is rescued by a fishermen (Tracy). Unable to convince them of his wealth, he is enlisted in the crew until they return to port and he can be reunited with his father.

The films was a success at the box office and with critics, receiving the following Academy Award nominations:

  • Best Picture – Louis D. Lighton
  • Best Writing, Screenplay (later Best Adapted Screenplay) – Marc Connelly, John Lee Mahin, Dale Van Every
  • Best Film Editing – Elmo Veron

Spencer Tracy received the Best Actor Award for his role as fisherman Manuel Fidello.
