Academy Award nominated actor Harvey Keitel was born on this day in 1939.

Whilst appearing in Off-Broadway productions, Keitel auditioned for Martin Scorsese‘s Who’s That Knocking at My Door (1967) and it was the start of a successful partnership between the two. Their films together including Mean Streets (1973), Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974) and Taxi Driver (1976).

Keitel was originally cast in the role of Captain Willard in Francis Ford Coppola‘s Apocalypse Now (1979) but Coppola was not happy with Keitel’s portrayal of the ¬†character and reluctantly made the decision to replace him with Martin Sheen.

During the 1980s he played mainly supporting roles in films such as Falling in Love (1984) and Wise Guys (1986) before taking on the role of Judas in The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), again working with Scorsese.

In 1991 he starred as the sympathetic policeman in Ridley Scott‘s Thelma & Louise and that same year starred in Barry Levinson‘s Bugsy, earning himself a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nomination.

Other films that Keitel is well known for include Reservoir Dogs (1992), The Piano (1993), Pulp Fiction (1994) and From Dusk till Dawn (1986).
