On this day in 1999 Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace was released.

Sixteen years after Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983) was released, George Lucas was back with the fourth instalment of the Star Wars series. He began production of the film only after he was happy that special effects techniques had advanced to the level he felt the film needed.

On it’s release it caused excitement amongst Star Wars fans but received a mixed reception from the film critics. Despite this it became a box office success, breaking the record set by The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) for the largest single-day gross and taking more than $28 million on it’s opening day.

The film received the following Academy Award nominations:

  • Best Sound Mixing – Gary Rydstrom, Tom Johnson, Shawn Murphy and John Midgley
  • Best Sound Editing – Tom Burtt and Tom Bellfort
  • Best Visual Effects – John Knoll, Dennis Muren, Scott Squires and Rob Coleman
