On this day in 1980 The Empire Strikes Back was released.

It was the second film in the Star Wars franchise to be released but the fifth chapter, hence it being retitled Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, after the Prequel Trilogy was released.

On it’s release it was met with mixed reviews from the critics but has gone on to become the most critically acclaimed film in the series. It became the highest grossing film of 1980 and the twelfth-highest grossing film in the US (when adjusted for inflation).

It received the following Academy Awards:

  • Best Sound – Bill Varney, Steve Maslow, Gregg Landaker and Peter Sutton
  • Special Achievement Award (Best Visual Effects) – Brian Johnson, Richard Edlund, Dennis Muren and Bruce Nicholson

and the following nomination:

  • Best Art Direction – Norman Reynolds, Leslie Dilley, Harry Lange, Alan Tomkins and Michael Ford
