Academy Award winning actor, director and producer Clint Eastwood was born on this day in 1930.

After a series of uncredited roles in films he received his big break with the role of Rowdy Yates in the US television series Rawhide. It was this role that led to him working with the relatively unknown Italian film director Sergio Leone, after Eastwood’s co-star turned down the offer to star in the spaghetti Western A Fistful of Dollars (1964). The film made Eastwood a star and he signed up for the sequels For A Few Dollars More (1965) and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966).

His success led to roles in Dirty Harry series of films, Play Misty for Me (1971) which was also his directorial debut, the adventure comedy films Every Which Way but Loose (1978) and it’s sequel Any Which Way You Can (1980), Escape from Alcatraz (1979) and Pale Rider (1985)

Unforgiven (1992) earned him his first Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director, with a Best Actor nomination. He received his second Best Picture and Best Director Awards for Million Dollar Baby (2004) along with nominations for Mystic River (2003), Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) and American Sniper (2014).

Other films he is well known for include The Outlaw Josey Wales (1977), The Bridges of Madison County (1995), Gran Torino (2008), Invictus (2009) and Jersey Boys (2014).
