Happy Birthday to Academy Award winning actress Kathy Bates.

She began her career on Broadway before landing her first film role in Miloš Forman‘s Taking Off (1971). Following this she had a supporting role in the Dustin Hoffman film Straight Time (1978), before working in television for most the 1980s.

Her breakthrough role in film came when she starred in one of her most memorable roles, as the obsessed fan Annie Wilkes opposite James Caan in the thriller Misery (1990), a role which earned her the Best Actress Academy Award.

A year later she starred in another memorable role as Evelyn Couch in the film Fried Green Tomatoes (1991) before playing Molly Brown in James Cameron‘s film Titanic (1997).

Primary Colors (1998) and About Schmidt (2002) gave Bates her second and third Academy Award nominations, both for Best Supporting Actress.

Her other film roles include Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean (1982), for which she reprised her Broadway role, Arthur 2: On the Rocks (1988), Prelude to a Kiss (1992),  and Dolores Claiborne (1995).
