On this day in 1988 US fantasy film Willow was released. Directed by Ron Howard and produced by George Lucas, it received mixed reviews from the critics.

The special effects were provided by Industrial Light & Magic and they let to a revolutionary breakthrough in the industry with their morphing technology.

Although the critics were undecided and it was not the blockbuster success that had been hoped for, the film did make a profit and became a modest success.

It was also nominated for the following Academy Awards:

  • Best Sound Editing – Ben Burtt, Richard Hymns
  • Best Visual Effects – Dennis Muren, Michael J. McAlister, Phil Tippett, Christopher Evans
