On this day in 1980 Stanley Kubrick’s loose adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Shining was released.
Up until this point Kubrick’s films were not mass marketed, relying on word-of-mouth to develop the audience. The Shining however was released as a blockbuster film nationwide. The critical reception was mixed at first but over time this changed and it is now regarded as on the greatest films ever made. Martin Scorsese himself rated it as one of the scariest films of all time.
