Hammer House and Doctor Who actor Peter Cushing was born on this day in 1913.

He made his screen debut in The Man in the Iron Mask (1939) but his first major film role was Hamlet (1948).

Cushing is best known for his roles as Victor Frankenstein and Professor Van Helsing in the Hammer Film Productions horror films from the 1950s through to the 1960s. His best known films being The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) and Dracula (1958).

As well horror Cushing was also known for his roles as Sherlock Holmes in a series of films, the most notable being the Hammer film The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959), which was the first Sherlock Holmes adaptation to be filmed in colour.

Another well known role was as Doctor Who in the films Dr. Who and the Daleks (1965) and Daleks – Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D (1966).
