Academy Award nominated actress Beulah Bondi was born on this day in 1889.

She made her film debut in Street Scene (1931), reprising her 1929 stage role, and followed this up with Rain (1932) with Joan Crawford.

Bondi became one of the first women to be nominated for the newly introduced Best Supporting Actress award for her role in The Gorgeous Hussy (1936), followed by a second nomination for Of Human Hearts (1938).

She was best known for her roles as mother figures, particularly as James Stewart’s mother in the films Vivacious Lady (1938), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) and It’s a Wonderful Life (1946). She was also well known for her role as mother of two in Our Town (1940).
