Day School: Family Life with Kore-eda Hirokazu

Mechanics Institute Library – Bradford

Saturday 17 November, 10.30am – 4.30pm

Tutor: Roy Stafford

Kore-eda Hirokazu is the director of Shoplifters which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes this year. The film is released in UK cinemas on November 23rd and our latest Film Day School will offer the perfect introduction to the distinctive world of Kore-eda’s Japanese families.

The day will focus on Kore-eda’s more recent films in which the idea of families coping with unusual circumstances is explored in ways that have attracted large audiences in Japan, prizes at international film festivals and the admiration of many other filmmakers. How does the director entrance audiences with what seem at first to be quiet domestic stories? We’ll try to place Kore-eda’s modern approach in the context of Japanese classical cinema.

Tea and coffee are available in the Mechanics Institute Library. There are places nearby to buy lunch but you are also welcome to bring your own.

Tickets are £18 and £12 concessions.
