Day School: Across the Borderline – Mexico and the United States on Screen
Mechanics Institute Library – Bradford
Saturday 16 February, 10.30am – 4.30pm
Tutor: Roy Stafford
Donald Trump wants to build a wall to stop Mexicans (and Central Americans) entering his country. But what does he know about the long history of the border and of the migrations by both Mexicans and ‘Americans’ since the 18th century? Hollywood and Mexican film industries know about that history and its wealth of stories. Filmmakers have found various ways of exploring what the border means.
Our Day School will look at films made by both industries and at how Hollywood has at various times dominated Mexican attempts to tell their own stories. The diverse cultures of the region – European, Indigenous peoples and Mestizos – are not separated by a physical border as Trump is likely to discover. The event will feature a full screening of a Mexican film (title tbc).
Tea and coffee are available in the Mechanics Institute Library. There are places nearby to buy lunch but you are also welcome to bring your own.
Tickets: £18 and £12 concession.
