A Hollywood Classic
In A Lonely Place
Saturday 12 February, 2pm
Complementing earlier events on Suspicion and Double Indemnity, this new event focuses on In a Lonely Place, one of the finest Hollywood noirs. Produced by Humphrey Bogart’s own company, it features perhaps Bogart’s best acting performance as a Hollywood writer suffering from what might now be recognised as PTSD following wartime service.
Based loosely on a novel by Dorothy B. Hughes, one of the few female ‘hard-boiled’ writers, the film features a heart-breaking romance for Bogart and Gloria Grahame, then in the process of ending her brief marriage to the director Nicholas Ray. Could it be that the off-screen tension informs Grahame’s terrific performance? Add in a savage commentary on aspects of the film business and you have all the ingredients for the perfect noir romance and crime melodrama. As one critic put it: “This movie is film noir for fully-grown adults”. (Eddie Muller on TCM Noir Alley).
Detailed notes and a short presentation video will be available before the online discussion.
In a Lonely Place is available to rent from Amazon, Apple (in HD), Google, YouTube and other streamers.
