10.30am – 4.30pm
Mechanics Institute Library, Bradford
We are pleased to confirm that Powell and Pressburger will indeed be Going to War as the Archers, as December’s postponed Day School will now take place on Saturday 10 February.
Those of you who booked for the original December date, don’t worry, your ticket is still valid and you should have been contacted already to confirm your place.
If you haven’t booked yet, and thought you’d missed out, then you don’t need to worry either. There are still a few tickets available on the door so just reply to this email and we’ll save you a place, as well as send you the notes ahead of the event.
Due to the ongoing ‘refurbishment’ of the Mechanics Institute Library, there will be a member of the team waiting at the front door to guide you in.
About the Event
The BFI’s national season of Powell & Pressburger films is now in full swing and our local event will look at a specific aspect of The Archers philosophy – how to make a different kind of propaganda film.
Our focus will be the 1942 film One of Our Aircraft is Missing which tells the story of how the Dutch resistance help an RAF bomber crew forced to bail out of their damaged Wellington. This sometimes overlooked picture is, in our view, very good indeed and features David Lean as editor and Ronald Neame as Director of Photography. We’ll also look at other wartime films such as The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943) and A Canterbury Tale (1944)
Several wartime (and other) films by Powell & Pressburger are now FREE to view on BFI Player. You do not need to subscribe for the free films and more information can be found here.
The more Powell & Pressburger films you have seen, the more detailed our potential discussion. There are a dozen films made during the period 1939-45, though not all are contemporary propaganda pictures.
Tea and coffee are available, for a small donation, and you are welcome to bring your own lunch.
Tickets are available on the door but due to limited places, please let us know if you are planning to buy your ticket on the door.
